Question

What is NFC? Near Field Communication.

Answer

Chances are, you've seen the NFC logo on a product or two and wondered what it meant. NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a type of wireless communication that allows two devices to exchange data when they are near each other

You may have also seen NFC tags, which store data that an NFC-enabled device can read. For example, an NFC tag could be programmed with information (data) like a URL so that when you tap your phone against the tag, your phone's browser will automatically open the URL. Or, an NFC tag could be programmed with contact information, so tapping your phone against the tag would add the contact to your address book. s͛Card helps keep your contact information organised and up-to-date while providing extra features like linking directly to your s͛Card profile.

NFC is a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology branch that has existed since 2002. However, it has only recently started to gain mainstream adoption. In this article, we'll explore NFC in more detail and answer common questions about this technology.

How Does NFC Work?

NFC operates on the principle of inductive coupling. This means that power is transferred between the two devices using magnetic fields. One device functions as an NFC reader/writer, and the other functions as an NFC tag. The reader/writer can read and write data to the tag. Data can also be exchanged between two NFC-enabled devices if they are placed close to each other (usually no more than 4 cm apart though the actual distance is 10cm max)

The reader/writer generates a magnetic field to communicate using inductive coupling. This field provides the tag power and transmits data between the two devices. The amount of power that can be transmitted using inductive coupling is very limited, which is why NFC tags are typically very small (they don't need a large battery)
